Hirudotherapy (Leech)

Leech therapy affects the body at the level of microcirculation and it consists of three factors: reflectory, mechanical, and biological:

- The mechanical effect uses the principle of therapeutic phlebotomy (blood-letting). At some loss of blood, it relieves blood flow, cleans out vessels, and regulates the pressure. The renewed blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients to the damaged or inflamed area. Due to this, the swelling decreases and pain are relieved.

- The reflectory effect can be compared to that of dry needling (acupuncture). A leech bites through the skin only in bioactive (acupuncture) points that are connected to various body organs and systems.

- The biological effect of hirudin (leech enzyme) is available within the next 3 months after the procedure. During this time, clots are dispersed, red blood cells are replaced by new ones, and the blood is rejuvenated.
